The Chakra System: Crown: Sahasrara

“When you’re on a journey to fulfill your personal legend, the whole universe conspires to help you achieve it.” – The Alchemist

I had an epiphany once.

Not just a bright idea that we often try to masquerade as an epiphany, but the real kind.

The kind that holds true to the fundamental significance of the word.

That feels like a stream of consciousness being gifted to you from some otherworldly source.

The kind that changes the complete trajectory of your entire life.

I remember the experience perfectly.

I had gone to a local spa to receive a chakra balancing massage.

The therapist focused on my heart, but also balanced all seven of the chakras.

When the session ended I felt refreshed and relaxed, but nothing extraordinary.

That is, until a few minutes later.

I walked out of the building and got into my car, but instead of driving away, for some unknown reason I felt compelled to just sit in silence for a moment.

So that’s what I did.

I brought my awareness to how my body felt at that time.

Suddenly and out of nowhere, I felt like I had been hit over the head by some invisible force.

Like a gallon of water had just dumped onto me, filling my energetic body with an external intelligent energy.

In that second, I had an overwhelming feeling that I needed to go to school for massage therapy. Something that I had never once thought of, prior to that moment.

It was a realization that hit me with such force that I had no choice other than to pursue it.

A week later, I was registered at an integrative therapeutic academy.

As I have traveled down this path, I’ve transformed from student to therapist to intuitive healer.

All along being guided by my intuition and some connection to the Divine that I can’t fully understand.

What I know now, is that this epiphany was a result of my crown chakra being opened and balanced during that session.

I was being guided by my higher self to find my true purpose.

To walk the path of an intuitive healer.

The crown chakra is commonly placed at the apex of the cranium, although some believe that this chakra actually hovers about four finger widths above the top of the head.

It is linked with the cerebral plexus and governs the central nervous system.

This chakra is unique in its activation as its open at the time of birth.

Throughout the first 18 months of life, this chakra slowly closes, in tandem with the fontanel in the cranium. Once the fontanel is fused this chakra goes dormant, waiting to be reactivated again between the ages of 14 through 21 years.

Physically, the crown is associated with the pineal gland, which is often times referred to as the “seat of the soul”.

The pineal is a small, pinecone shaped gland that resides near the center of the brain.

Its primary function is to produce certain hormones that serve vital functions to our homeostasis.

This includes our sleep/wake patterns and our circadian rhythm.

It’s been discovered that the pineal is sensitive to all types of magnetic fields.

One of the main reasons for this is because this gland is closely associated with magnetic sensing crystals that grow within our brain near the ethmoid bone behind the sinus cavity.

These crystals synchronize our circadian and seasonal reactions with biological changes in our body.

A good example of this is acclimation.

In Idaho, 60 degrees in September is going to feel cold after the higher temperatures of summer. However, 60 degrees in April is going to feel hot after the colder winter.

This is because our body has acclimated to the seasonal changes throughout the year. A process that is overseen by the pineal gland and these magnetite crystals.

Our entire body is one huge electromagnetic generator and it’s been recorded by some neuroscientists that most people’s magnetite crystals begin to calcify in early adulthood…around the same time that the crown chakra is preparing to activate.

This calcification causes problems with the way our body orients itself, amidst the electromagnetic frequencies that are continually being presented to us.

This disorientation can manifest literally as a decreased sense of direction.

But, it has also been linked to other dysfunctions such as depression, ADHD, chronic pain, insomnia and even Alzheimer’s disease.

This occurrence can result in your crown not opening properly or becoming blocked shortly after activation.

The good news is that we can restore the pineal gland’s energetic vibrancy by synching back up with the natural electromagnetic fields emanated from the Earth, a process called, “Earthing”.

Simply by standing in soil outside, barefoot for as little as 20 minutes a day can stimulate this gland’s function and the regrowth of healthy magnetite crystals.

It’s also been shown that meditation is highly effective in this as well.

Through meditation we are not only able to restore the balance of our physical and energetic bodies, but we also open the door to our crown chakra.

The crown is also associated with the skull, brain stem, cranial nerves, cranial plexus, cerebral cortex, the brain itself, the cranium bones and the central nervous system.

Some of the main physical symptoms of an imbalanced crown include:

  • Disorders of the Muscular System

  • Disorders of the Skeletal System

  • Disorders of the Skin

  • Depression

  • Chronic Exhaustion (not linked to a physical disorder)

  • Headaches

  • Coordination Challenges

  • Migraines

  • Dizziness

  • Brain Tumors

  • Amnesia

  • Alzheimer’s

  • Epilepsy

  • Multiple Sclerosis

  • Parkinson’s Disease

  • Schizophrenia

  • Learning Issues

  • Psychosis

  • Neurosis

  • Insomnia

  • Sensitivity to Light

  • Sensitivity to Sound

  • Sensitivity to the Environment

Psychologically the crown governs all of our emotional and mental relationships with higher forms of consciousness.

This includes, hope, faith, and our perception and awareness.

It is our truth.

With this chakra, we embrace and become one with our absolute and true essential nature.

Its primary function is to provide us with a loving space to grow in spirituality.

It’s the home base of our spiritual progression.

But, sometimes life circumstances can make it hard for us to see our truth and move forward on our spiritual journey.

And this can create dysfunction in the crown chakra.

You may see an imbalance to the crown manifesting in the following psychological ways:

With a blocked and deficient crown:

  • Lack of Purpose

  • Lack of Ethics

  • Lack of Joy

  • Lack of Trust

  • Loss of Meaning

  • Loss of Identity

  • Apathy

  • Materialism

  • Selfishness

  • Inability For Closure

  • Fear of Religion

  • Fear of Spirituality

  • Unwise Decisions

  • Spiritual Cynicism

  • Learning Difficulties

  • Fear of Death

  • Feeling Alone

  • Feeling Separate From Others

  • Ignoring One’s Own Bodily Needs

With an over-active and excessive crown:

  • Overly Intellectual (Living in the Head)

  • Feelings of Superiority

  • Manic-Depressive Behavior

  • Hysterical Behavior

  • Addiction to Religion

  • Addiction to Any Fanatic Spiritual Idea

  • Dissociation From The Body

When the crown chakra is in balance you will find an ease in, not only listening to your intuition, but with trusting it whole heartedly.

You will move forward in life with a sense of selflessness that does not diminish your vital energy.

You will have a “knowing” of superior consciousness that is surrounded by empathy. Many metaphysicians refer to this process as moving through an awakening.

Ultimately, you will feel the true essence of inner peace.

Here are some tools that you can use in your daily life to help bring balance back to your crown chakra.

  • Thought: The crown chakra is not associated with a specific element. However, some relate it to clear thought. Incorporating a daily meditation practice into your life will help open and stimulate this chakra.

  • Aromatherapy: Essential oils beneficial for the crown include: Sandalwood, Saffron, Lotus, and Jasmine.

  • Color Therapy: The color of the crown is white, so bringing more of that color into your daily life is an easy way to nourish this chakra.

  • Sound Therapy: The frequency of the crown is 480 Hz and Keynote B. Find music that plays mainly at this frequency and close to this keynote. Also silence can be incredibly healing for this chakra.

  • Reflexology: Massage these areas to stimulate energy flow to the crown: On the hand, the tips of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers. On the foot, the tip of the pad of the big toe, massage clockwise.

  • Nutrition for the Crown Chakra: Unlike the previous chakras, this one is nourished spiritually instead of physically. Its nourishment comes from meditation and fasting. Incorporating a routine detox or fasting regiment into your life can be very beneficial for this chakra.

  • Affirmations: Create a positive affirmation. Write one that feels right to you and state it several times throughout your day.

  • I honor my body as the vehicle of my soul.

  • I am divinely guided and inspired.

  • I accept and honor the spirit within me and all living things.

  • I am infinite and boundless.

  • I am complete.

As we travel throughout our lives we experience things that can cause a misunderstanding of spiritual principles such as self-love and self-perception.

To help clear those skewed misconceptions we can explore questions such as: “Can we truly see that we are complete and whole, just as we are in that moment?” or “Can we feel an authentic love for our own being?”

If the answer is no, don’t fret, it is for most of us….that just means that you’ve found your starting point.

Continue to ask yourself questions, dive deeper until you unearth the root of those belief systems.

Shed light on them and allow them to heal.

With a clear crown chakra, we gain a wider knowledge of our higher self and we are able to comprehend ourselves in a way that was not possible before.

With that understanding comes the ability to expand outside of ourselves and bring that awareness and perspective to how we view everything around us.

It’s the ability to live in the present moment and also to see the bigger picture of life’s complexities.

To be able to see and comprehend that the macrocosm is comparable to the microcosm.

That we are a reflection of the Universe.
